5 Reasons Your Wi-Fi Slows Down at Night

If your internet feels great in the morning and crawls to a halt every evening, you're not imagining it — and you're not alone. It's one of the most common calls our technicians take. Here are the five culprits we find most often, roughly in order of how often we see them.

1. Everyone else's Wi-Fi is competing with yours

Most home routers broadcast on the 2.4GHz band, which only has a handful of non-overlapping channels. In dense neighborhoods, dozens of routers end up crowding the same channels right around 6–10pm when everyone's home. Switching your router to the 5GHz band, or letting it auto-select the least congested channel, often fixes this in minutes.

2. Streaming devices are hogging bandwidth

A single 4K stream can use 15–25 Mbps, and it's common for a household to have three or four screens going at once during prime time. If your plan is on the lower end, that alone can explain the slowdown. We can help you right-size your internet plan or set up Quality of Service (QoS) rules that prioritize video calls and work traffic over background streaming.

3. Background updates and backups

Game consoles, laptops, and phones love to schedule big downloads for the evening when they're plugged in and idle. A single game update can saturate your entire connection for twenty minutes. Most devices let you schedule automatic updates for overnight hours instead.

4. Your router needs a better spot — or an upgrade

Routers placed in a closet, behind a TV, or on the floor lose significant range and speed. Heat also plays a role: routers that run hot after hours of daytime use can throttle performance in the evening. If your router is more than four or five years old, it may also simply lack the newer Wi-Fi 6 standard that handles multiple devices far more efficiently.

5. Too many devices, not enough network

Many homes now have 20 or more connected devices once you count smart plugs, doorbells, thermostats, and speakers. A consumer router built for a dozen devices will start dropping packets well before it hits its official device limit. A mesh system or a managed access point can handle this load far more gracefully.
